Found worldwide, except North America. Very similar (immatures almost identical) to the Green Heron of North America, with some range overlap in Panama and northern Colombia. There are enough records from Costa Rica to trust that this species might be here along with the Green Heron.

Green Heron
Green Heron (Butorides virescens virescens)
Panama City, Panama
The immature Green Heron looks virtually identical to the immature Striated Heron. There is some range overlap in northern South America and Panama.
