Found above 2000m on the Santa Marta Sierra Nevada. The Grey-breasted Wood Wren, subspecies bangsi, is found lower. Once called the Santa Marta Wood Wren. Note smaller size, shorter wings and bill, and slight vocal and color differences.

Found only at high altitudes of the western Andean slope in Colombia, and with a more musical song than the Grey-breasted Wood Wren.
