Ashy-throated Bush Tanager (Chlorospingus canigularis conspicillatus) Otún Quimbaya Wildlife Sanctuary, Pereira, Risaralda, Colombia Note yellow chest band, dark eyes, thin bill with light lower mandible, and light-colored belly.

Uncommon, and usually high and difficult to see. Note lack of white mark behind the eye present in almost all races of very similar Common Bush Tanager. Head grey in South America, but olive in Central America.

Common Bush Tanager (Chlorospingus flavopectus nigriceps) La Romera, Itagui, Antioquia, Colombia The nigriceps subspecies has a black head and does not have a white spot behind the eye, and is often mistaken for the Ashy-throated Bush Tanager.

Common at mid elevations (1200-2400m). Note differences with white spot behind eye, and shades of color in head and throat across large range.

Also called Short-billed Bush Tanager. Similar to Yellow-throated Bush Tanager, but central part of throat is white. Note white eye.

Typical Bush Tanager. Joins mixed flocks. Birds closer to Ecuador have red eyes, while birds in Colombia have light eye.
