Red-stained refers to red marks in the wings, which are sometimes not seen well or not present. Similar to Little Woodpecker, but a bit larger.
An individual with red stains on the wing.

A small woodpecker rarely seen and usually found around 3000m.

Quite a bit larger than the tiny piculets, but smaller than other woodpeckers. Prefers forest edges or secondary forest. In southeast Brazil and south Bolivia the male's red is only on the nape.
