Birds of Mexico

    ANSERIFORMES: Anatidae (Ducks, Geese, Swans)  
Genus: Aythya (5 species, 12 worldwide)

Aythya is a genus of 'diving ducks', but their diet is similar to genus Anas, 'dabbling ducks', and is a mixture of plant and animal matter (insects, mollusks, but not fish).

The Lesser Scaup has a narrower, taller head than the Greater Scaup, and is a bit smaller. The head may have a purple iridescence.
