Genus Amazona, Amazon Parrots, are large (most species around 35 cm.) stocky mostly green parrots with broad wings and short tails. They travel in noisy flocks.

An isolated population of Red-lored Amazon in the middle of the Amazon is now considered a new species, the Diademed Amazon.

Similar to Mealy Amazon but note white skin at base of bill and white eye-ring, red on side of tail, and distinctive call. Also somewhat smaller in size at 35 cm.. A Brazilian endemoic recenly (2021) recorded in Mitu, Colombia.
