Puffs at base of legs sometimes small or not noticeable. White on belly variable (related to sex or subspecies?). Often misidentified; note coppery head and rump and smallish size. Found inside the forest, often perched about two meters above the ground.

Found inside the forest, and similar to the Greenish Puffleg, but less green and more grey/drab. Male and female similar, but male is dark grey in front, while female is lighter (hoary). Note rufous rump and head can be hard too see in the field.
Flashed to bring out colors.
