Red-stained refers to red marks in the wings, which are sometimes not seen well or not present. Similar to Little Woodpecker, but a bit larger.
An individual with red stains on the wing.

Has a fast call almost like a Tapaculo. Note greyish mask compared to white on the larger and more common Golden-olive Woodpecker.

Quite a bit larger than the tiny piculets, but smaller than other woodpeckers. Prefers forest edges or secondary forest.
