A new species discovered in 2018. Compare to Ecuadorian Hillstar but note ultramarine blue throat. Found in southwest Ecuador at 3,700 meters on east and west slope. A few hundred individuals are believed to exist.

Split from the Andean Hillstar. On male, note green head and black (not brown) stripe from chest to belly.
