Small and compact with short bill and olive-yellow wings (HBW). Note white band on underside of tail of male. Female less yellow and somewhat streaked.

Common even in urban areas. Expanding range with deforestation.
Immatures males often have only a yellow chest band, making then look like a different species.

Usually found in marshes deep in tall reeds at all altitudes. Sometimes in large groups.
