Found in bamboo-laden Andean cloudforest from Venezuela to Bolivia (Athanas). The most widespread treehunter, but not the easiest to see.

Vocal, but rarely pops out of dense vegetation, and is often close to the ground.

Generally seen at lower altitude than the Striped or Flammulated Treehunter, from 1500m-2000m, and unstreaked front makes identification easy. Seen feeding at bromeliads.
