Reasonably common in its range and follows mixed flocks (Athanas).

  Note mottled chest. Orange face may be a feature of immatures.

Un-rufous except for the all-rufous tail. Similar to Rufous-rumped Foliage-gleaner, which has a rufous tail AND rump. Note mottled chest on Rufous-tailed compared to plain one-colored chest on Rufous-rumped (Ridgely).
