Genus Chlorostilbon are 'emerald' hummingbirds, a group of small and very similar uniformly darkish green hummingbirds (the males). Females are white in front with a black stripe across the face.

Only half of the lower mandible of the male is red. Note smaller size, straighter bill, and all green vent vs. scaled vent on Shining-green Hummingbird.

Found at higher altitudes that other species in the same genus. Note wings extend past the tail. Where species overlap, the male is more golden green than the darker green emeralds like Red-billed Emerald.

Male and female have coppery (bronzy) color on back and especially tail, which is a noticeably different color from other emeralds. Found from sea level to 2500m (HBW) but most common at mid levels (800-1800).
